Traditional Martial Arts Instruction

Jade Tiger Martial Arts is dedicated to teaching and promoting traditional Kung Fu and Tai Chi Ch'uan. Our classes have a friendly, laid back atmosphere, yet we train hard and are constantly striving to improve and refine our art.

Kung Fu

For students looking to increase flexibility and strength, Kung Fu styles are an excellent choice. The basic drills can be done in varying ways to provide a cardio workout, strength training, or a stretching routine. The empty hand and weapons sets are designed to help students train coordination and balance. They also provide the roadmap for the style's self defense principles and techniques.

At Jade Tiger Martial Arts we train in three different Kung Fu systems. Northern Longfist is our primary style and students begin there. It is athletic and dynamic with long range techniques, powerful kicks and throws. Southern White Crane is a close range fighting style with a heavy emphasis on joint locking techniques and whipping power. The Southern Five Animal system incorporates tiger, snake, crane, dragon, and leopard with a focus on internal energy development.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi Ch'uan, Hsing-I Ch'uan, and Bagua Zhang are three systems of Chinese Martial Arts that are classified as Internal Styles. Our Internal curriculum begins with Yang Style Tai Chi. We also teach the relatively obscure Guang Ping Yang Style once students reach a satisfactory proficiency in the Yang Style.

Hsing-I Ch'uan and Bagua Zhang are the other two internal styles offered at Jade Tiger and although they share certain principles with Tai Chi Ch'uan, they are separate and complete systems in and of themselves.
Internal styles place a great emphasis on cultivating Chi (energy) and using whole body connection to produce movement. The enhanced flow of Chi brings about many health benefits for the dedicated student.

Qigong

Qigong is a general term for any exercise that involves energetic awareness and direction. There are hundreds of different qigong sets with varying methods and goals. Some sets use dynamic tension while others remain relaxed. There are sets that support martial arts training and sets that are for health only. Whatever the method and purpose, all qigong uses breath control and mindful awareness as the foundation.

We offer about a dozen qigong sets that are included in both the Kung Fu and Tai Chi classes.
